Experience the Equanimity of the Equinox!
Sat Nam, Sunshines! Are you ready to spring into your spiritual practice and bring balance back into your life? This Sunday I'll be leading Yoga Mala at Sat Nam Yoga Chicago to welcome the Spring Equinox with a glorious practice of 108 Sun Salutations through 9 rounds of 12, each with a different dedication for the season ahead. The Equinox is a day where the Earth is in perfect equanimity; a perfect balance of light and dark. This sacred time gives us the opportunity to bring harmony back into our own lives and welcome the positive change a new season can bring.
Why do we do 108? Well, there are nearly 108 different interpretations... The most simple is 1 represents the source, 0 represents selflessness in our spiritual practice, and 8 represents our infiniteness. There are also said to be a total of 108 energy lines converging to form the heart chakra. One of them, sushumna leads to the crown chakra, and is said to be the path to self-realization. Some say there are 108 feelings, with 36 related to past, 36 related to present, and 36 related to future.
We do 9 rounds of 12 because there are 12 constellations, and 9 arc segments called namshas or chandrakalas. 9 x 12 = 108. In astrology, there are 12 houses and 9 planets. Again, 9 x 12 = 108. The diameter of the sun is 108x the diameter of the Earth. 9 is the limit of all numbers, all others existing and coming from the same. 0 to 9 is all you need to make up an infinite amount of numbers. And 108 salutations in 9 rounds of 12 is all we need to explore the infinity of ourselves.
Sunday we will lean on the infinite in these finite circumstances, and in that we will find success in ourselves. Come to flow into union with the universe; celebrate and meditate; set your intentions and plant your seeds so that when April showers come, you start to sprout into your fullness. Join me in joy. Sacrifice the ego to receive and resurrect your own self into the domain of light.
This sacred practice is open to all levels. There will be a short break between each round, and you're welcome to take rest whenever your body needs.
I hope to salute the sun with you on Sunday! If you'd like to pre-register, you can do so here.
Sat Nam & Namaste,
